A Sudoku puzzle sometimes spelled Su Doku  is a logic-based placement puzzle. The Japanese looks lke: 数独, also known as Number Place in the United States. The name Sudoku is the Japanese abbreviation of a longer phrase, "suji wa dokushin ni kagiru," meaning "the digits must remain single".

The aim of the canonical puzzle is to enter a numerical digit from 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 subgrids (called "regions"), starting with various digits given in some cells (the "givens"). Each row, column, and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. Completing the puzzle requires patience and logical ability. Although first published in a U. S. puzzle magazine in 1979, Sudoku initially caught on in Japan in 1986 and attained international popularity in 2005.

There is no mathematics required to solve the puzzles, just pure logic and reasoning.

Sometimes you can’t finish a grid because you can’t deduce any more numbers with cross hatching. In this case, you need to make a good guess on one number and hope that the puzzle will solve.

It is often the case that a cell can only possibly take a single value, when the contents of the other cells in the same row, column and block are considered. This is when, between them, the row, column and block use eight different digits, leaving only a single digit available for the cell.

If a cell is the only one in a row, column or block that can take a particular value, then it must have that value. This is because all rows, columns and blocks, must contain each of the digits 1 to 9.
 

Sometimes, when you examine a block, you can determine that a certain number must be in a specific row or column, even though you cannot determine exactly which cell in that row or column. This is enough information to remove that number from the candidate list for other cells in the same row or column, but outside the block.

If a number appears as candidates for only two cells in two different blocks, but both cells are in the same column or row, it is possible to remove that number as a candidate for other cells in that column or row.
